History

History of Belleisle Ladies - by Past Captain Elizabeth Wilson

There was a Ladies Golf Course before the First World War when all the Golf was played on the Old Racecourse. The Clubhouse was previously the Grandstand for the Races. This building was known as 'View House' and is still there near the 9th green (now the 12th on Seafield). At the time two trophies were played for - the Drummond Rose Bowl and the Captain's Trophy (our present Past Captain's Cup). These two trophies disappeared for a number of years and when the New Club was formed they did not know of their existence.

The second Ladies Golf Club was started in 1928 to be known as the Belleisle Ladies Golf Club - known by the Men's Club from the beginning as the 'Belleisle Belles'. The first cup was given by Thomas Moore, he was the MP for Ayr Burgh at that time and had not been knighted. Provost Wilson gave the second cup. These two trophies were all the Club had until after the second World War. The two cups were always played for before the end of June as there wwere a number of teachers in the Club and during the holiday months it was difficult to arrange ties. The cups were always presented on the Putting Green in front of the Clubhouse and then everyone went for tea in the Hotel.  Before the war the prizes were always presented by Sir Thomas Moore. Miss Sloane (Life Member) was the first secretary of the newly formed Club in the twenties and she carried  on for a while after the second World War. A photograph was taken of Mrs H McCallum presenting Miss Sloane with money for a Holiday at Gleneagles as a reward for her past services, unfortunately this photograph is no longer available.  When Rita Wilkie was Captain and Mrs H. McCallum Vice Captain, there was no trophy for the Championships and vouchers were given as prizes.
